Pulled together first draft of slides and talking notes for upcoming talk at QCon in SF on October 4th, which in my head I'm thinking of as "Solving the Engineering Strategy Crisis" although that is indeed not its official name. The "complex' solution here is basically: 1. Write down your implicit existing strategy 2. Use one of two methods (top-down, bottom-up) to improve it where it has issues I wish there was a more exciting solution, but I'm increasingly confident that's all there is to it.

"Software developers have said that having time blocked out in their workday to complete work in solitude would lead to greater collaboration throughout their teams." That’s the finding of new research from GitHub. This bears out our own research (link in comments), which shows the biggest frustration to be disruptions. Developers need focus time — and those leading dev teams need to understand how to build that into working processes.
"To avoid the talent flight risk, IT leaders must adopt a mindset of radical flexibility that provides employees with more autonomy for where, when and how work gets done." This recent report by Gartner bears out our own research with the software developer community: Location matters. We found that most developers prefer a flexible model, and there's a lack of evidence that productivity is negatively impacted by remote or hybrid working. Those making decisions about workplace policies should follow the data.
“Developers spend less than an hour on coding.” Aaron Hurst quotes our Code Time Report in this article for Information Age. Our more recent research shows this pattern remains, although the overall developer experience is improving, thanks in part to the flexibility afforded by remote and hybrid working models. This is a neat summary from TechRepublic of the importance of measuring software development teams’ productivity, and some of the flawed attempts to do so. TLDR: You can’t manage what you can’t measure.
